Alou: Limited Playing Time

After giving serious consideration to retiring at the end of 2006, 40-year-old Moises Alou is in Mets camp, gearing up for his 16th Major League season.

Alou was contemplating calling it quits mainly because he was tired of dealing with injuries -- hand, back and ankle problems knocked him out of action for 64 games in ‘06 -- but he figured he had enough left to boost the title hopes of a serious contender like the Mets. There’s no question Alou can still hit, as evidenced by his .571 slugging percentage last year, but the combination of nagging ailments and caution on the part of Mets will likely limit his plate appearances and affect his overall value to owners.
