Randy Johnson won't be ready to start the season

Arizona Diamondbacks' 43 year old Big Unit, Randy Johnson, will start the season on the shelf.

As to when Johnson, recovering from back surgery, actually will step on a mound this spring, manager Bob Melvin played coy.

"He'll play catch," Melvin said. "I have, potentially, the first bullpen date written down, but I'm not going with it yet. We'll just see if we get there."

Melvin, who said everyone is expected in camp on time, pretty much ruled out Johnson being ready to start the season, saying the club is content to expect him back in mid-to-late April.
