Carlos Zambrano: Wild Thing

Carlos Zambrano allowed two unearned runs on two hits over three innings in Wednesday’s win over the A’s. The Cubs ace also walked three and struck out three. Zambrano led the Majors with 115 walks allowed last season, so the wildness is nothing new. At the least, he seems open to exploring ways in which to get his overpowering stuff under control. "I think I was trying to do too much, and my left shoulder was too open," Zambrano said. "I learned from the experience. If you open your shoulder with your fastball ... the other pitches were working good, so you use the other pitches.” If Zambrano is able to cut back on the free passes and subsequently lower his WHIP, then he’s capable of surpassing all other NL starters in production.
