Brad Halsey Eyeing Fifth Starter Spot

As the A's begin a 29-game Cactus League schedule, one of the players Bob Geren will be watching closely is left-hander Brad Halsey, who gets the start today against the Milwaukee Brewers. Halsey is one of two leading candidates to land the fifth spot in the rotation. Although it's clear that left-hander Joe Kennedy is the front-runner, Geren hasn't ruled out Halsey.

Halsey, who last season appeared in 52 games (seven starts) and went 5-4 with a 4.68 ERA, has at least one minor league option remaining. He said he wouldn't be picky about the role he plays so long as it keeps him on the 25-man roster.

"In a perfect world, I'd like to be a starter," Halsey said. "But it's more important that I help the team win."
