Maholm Has Solid Outing

Paul Maholm threw 4 1/3 shutout innings vs. the Reds on Thursday, allowing no runs, no walks and two hits to go with three strikeouts. Maholm showed the kind of results he can deliver when he pounds the strike zone with his sinker, but it’s hard to get excited about a soft-tosser who rang up a 117/81 K/BB ratio in an uneven 2006 campaign. Chances are, there are more growing pains in store for the 24-year-old left-hander.
