Peavy: Shoulder Feels Good

Having undergone an aggressive offseason conditioning program that included working with a personal trainer for the first time, starter Jake Peavy believes he's over the shoulder tendinitis that dogged him throughout the 2006 season. "I left no seed unturned, health-wise," he said. "It's way more than I've done before."

Despite the nagging injury -- which many thought was the residual effect of his participation in the World Baseball Classic -- Peavy quietly moved into elite historical territory last year. The 9.56 K/9 IP he put together ranks ninth all time among starters in their age-25 season. Even more surprisingly, his career 8.85 K/9 IP is fourth all time for starters 25 years old or younger -- behind only Pedro Martinez, Sam McDowell and Sandy Koufax. Not too shabby. A healthy Peavy should be treated as a top 5 starter in 2007 fantasy drafts.
