Aaron Cook Developing New Pitches
A noted sinkerballer, Aaron Cook has enjoyed early success experimenting with a changeup and a four-seam fastball in Spring Training. Cook was effective in mixing in a good number of changeups in his March 4 start against the Diamondbacks, allowing one earned run with two strikeouts and no walks in three innings. "I'm feeling more comfortable throwing it to righties and lefties now," the 28-year-old right-hander said. "It's a big change of speed for me. I'm being powerful with it. I think that's the biggest difference. Instead of just saying this is a finesse pitch, it's a power pitch for me." If developing new pitches leads to more strikeouts for the ground-ball-inducing Cook -- who owns a mediocre 3.47 K/9 IP ratio over his five-year big-league career -- only good things can come of it.
